Matraissance: A Transition of Physicality and Spirituality

“Matraissance”, texture artwork by Elsa Jeandedieu, was exhibited at Hong Kong Visual Art Centre from 21-25 Nov, 2024.

JOURNEY THAT TRANSCENDS LANGUAGE

At the request of Being Neighbourly, Hong Kong-based French artist Elsa Jeandedieu created for an inaugural exhibition about the 'Transitions' of body, self, and place using her signature texture technique. Elsa chose to explore the profound shifts in both body and mind that occur during motherhood.

Being Neighbourly’s inaugural exhibition 'Transitions’ featured 9 other talented multi-media artists apart from Elsa - Andreas Von Buddenbrock, Vivian Ho, Bharat Khemlani, Francesco Lietti, Carol Man, Lindsey McAlister, Louise Soloway Chan, Peter Sung and Andrew Tse. The exhibition was held at Hong Kong Visual Art Centre from 21 to 25 November, 2024.

Matraissance” - combining "matriarch" and "renaissance," suggesting a rebirth or revival centered around feminine power. Elsa uses this term to name her “transitions”-themed texture artwork created with plaster, copper leaves & rust on jute canvas.

The artwork dimension is 150H x 100W x 5D cm.

Elsa’s depiction of mother and baby using her signature “Oscillation” technique.

Reflecting on her memories of nurturing her beloved son, Elsa utilized abstract shapes and oscillating textures to depict the connection between mother and baby.

At its center, a woman is depicted holding her baby - an embodiment of nurturing and new life. The woman's head, rendered in oxidized oscillation, represents the myriad transformations a mother undergoes, from physical changes to emotional awakenings.

In contrast, the baby, adorned in a plain shiny gold finish, symbolizes the purity and promise of a new beginning, radiating hope and vitality.

The rust finish interspersed throughout the abstract shapes conveys the powerful, sometimes tumultuous journey of motherhood. Together, the elements create a harmonious dialogue that resonates with the viewer, inviting reflection on the women’s body transition and the sacred bond between mother and child.
